The bar charts compare the proportion of smokers relative to gender and age for the years of 1995, 2000, and 2005, in a European country.
Overall, out of all three years, both genders in 1995 smoked less than the other age brackets in the other two years cited, with the 14-year-old group smoking the least.
There had been an increase in the number of 14-year-olds smoking in the year 2000 when compared to 1995 for both genders; however, in 2005, while the increasing trend continued for male 14-year-olds, slightly fewer female 14-year-olds were smoking, coming in at approximately 17.5%. Likewise, this pattern remained true for male 15 and 16-year-olds in 2005 when compared to the year 2000, with the proportion of 16-year-old boys falling to 35% and 15-year-olds to 28%; conversely, the percentage of 14-year-old boys smoking continued to increase to come in at 27% in 2005.
The pattern for the proportion of female smokers differed slightly, however, and was highest in 2005 for the 16-year-old category to stand at 28%, an increase of 3% from the year 2000, and similarly, the proportion of 15-year-old female smokers also increased, rising by 4% to reach 25% in 2005.
